There are a total of 22 balls in the game of snooker. There are 15 red balls and 6 coloured balls, and then of course there is the white ball. At the start of the snooker game all these balls have a specific place on the table where they should be.
The snooker table is marked to guide you when you are trying to achieve the correct snooker set up. Usually these markings are colour coded. However if they are not, here is how the snooker balls should be placed on the table:
1- The coloured balls should be placed at the bottom of the table where the “D” shape is drawn on the table. The brown ball needs to go in the centre of the baulk line with the yellow ball going to right of the brown ball and the green ball going to the right.
2- To achieve the correct snooker setup you need to place the rest of the coloured balls on the markings that can be found down the centre of the snooker table.
The blue ball should be put in the centre, the pink ball should be put between the blue ball and the bottom cushion, and then the black ball should be put 32.5 cm away from the top cushion.
3- All of the red balls then need to be put into the triangle and situated between the black and the pink ball.
4- The white cue ball can then be placed anywhere inside the “D” marking on the snooker table, when the first break-off shot is taken. Many players choose to put the ball on the baulk line between two of the coloured balls that are set up there.
Summary of the correct snooker set up:
(When looking at the table from where the Curved line of the D is facing you)
From left to right – Green, brown, yellow
Centre of the table – Blue
The far end marking – Pink
The furthest end marking – Black
Red Balls:
Between the Pink and the Black ball – The 15 red balls positioned in the triangle with base of the triangle parallel to the top of the table, and the tip of the triangle as close as possible to the pink ball.
That’s all there is to achieving the correct snooker setup. When you first start out playing snooker you may need to have guidance of some sort when laying out the balls on the table correctly, but eventually the layout will become second nature to you and you will no longer need any assistance.
