The rules of snooker are set out to ensure that the game is played correctly and fairly especially when played in a tournament for a cash prize or world title.
Snooker is a game played on a table that measures 6 foot by 12 foot. There are 15 balls in total all with a different point value associated with them.
When playing the game professionally the rules of snooker must be obeyed in order for you to win the game and also to avoid giving away points by committing a foul.
Let’s take a closer look at the most basic rules:
1- The game is to be played between two players.
2- You must alternate between the red and the coloured balls as long as there are red balls left on the table.
3- When there are no red balls left on the table you must then attempt to pot the coloured balls in an ascending order according to their point value.
4- You must always hit and pot the correct ball first. If you don’t it is your opponents turn on the table.
5- As long as you continue to pot the correct balls you can stay on the table.
6- The rules of snooker state that if you cause a ball to jump on the table in an attempt to avoid an obstruction caused by another ball it is considered a foul.
7- If a ball leaves the table completely it is considered a foul.
8- If the cue tip remains on the ball for too long during a shot then this is considered a foul and is called a push stroke.
9- Also if you pot an incorrect ball it is considered a foul.
10- If a coloured ball is potted accidently it must be put back on the table in its correct spot. However if a red ball is accidentally potted it is not returned to the table.
The rules of snooker are basically set out to ensure that the game is played fairly. So if you want to become a serious, professional snooker player it is very important that all the rules of snooker are clear in your mind.
You must also ensure that you are aware of all of the ways you can commit a foul after all, accumulating more points than your opponent is the object of the game so the last thing you want to do is give away points.
